Rendsburger Bürgermeister Rum - 1996 Caroni
This Caroni represents the fourth hand-bottled rum cask in Rendsburg. The series of single cask bottlings at cask strength honours former mayors of Rendsburg who have rendered outstanding services to the well-being of the town. In the case of the 1996 Caroni, the focus is on Richard Rühle v. Lilienstern, who was mayor of Rendsburg from 1885 to 1909. His driving force during the construction of the Kiel Canal led to the construction of two harbours and brought economic prosperity to Rendsburg.
The rum was bottled by Thomas Krüger. He is the owner of Whisky Krüger in Holzbunge, northern Germany, and is one of the absolute pioneers in the industry with his auction platform WhiskyAuction.Com.
He is also the founder of RCAAuction.Com, i.e. RhumAuction.Com, CognacAuction.Com and ArmagnacAuction.Com.
His Caroni bottlings from the Mayor series are considered to be among the best and rarest you can get.
Thomas Krüger's passion for spirits began at the age of 14. He discovered the exciting world of whisky in his parents' delicatessen and spirits shop and began collecting miniatures. Over time, he built up one of the most interesting whisky collections in the whole of Germany.
The conviction that old single malts are the best whiskies characterised his passion for collecting.
Faced with the increasing difficulty of finding old whisky bottlings, Thomas Krüger founded the first internet auction platform for whiskies - WhiskyAuction.Com - together with Klaus Rosenfeld in 1997.
Thomas Krüger met John Barrett of Bristol Spirits Ltd. at a business meeting in 2009. Their meeting in the oldest hotel in Bristol, the Llandoger Trow, was groundbreaking. Years later, their mutual sympathy led to Thomas purchasing two 1996 Caroni casks from John Barrett. These were immediately bottled by hand in Rendsburg and are among the few tropically matured Caroni rums. Unlike John Barrett, Thomas Krüger chose cask strength for his bottlings, which contributes to the popularity of these bottlings. The price for a 0.35 litre bottle was only 15 euros at the time.
